Rob and Ryan Weber win Minneapolis/St. Paul Business Journal’s Young Entrepreneur Award

St. Cloud, Minnesota, July 29, 2009 – Rob and Ryan Weber, founders of W3i in Sartell, MN, win the first ever, Young Entrepreneur Award, presented by Minneapolis/St. Paul Business Journal.  The award recognizes young entrepreneurs who are running successful businesses in the metro area.

2009 Software Industry Conference Wrap-Up

I returned from Boston last week after attending my first Software Industry Conference (SIC).  In this post I wanted to share with you some general information about the conference, the buzz, and information about W3i’s participation to keep you up to date with what transpired.

General Information

  • The conference was held at the Boston Marriot in Quincy from July 16th to July 18th.
  • Attendance was down a bit with an estimated 200 attendees (attributed to the economy).
  • Cost was only $269 at the door and as low as $229 if you registered early enough!  The organizers aim to keep costs down so that even small publishers can afford to attend.  The cost of admission includes a full conference pass, breakfast each day, food in the evening at events, and one luncheon.
  • Though inexpensive, the conference is packed with things to keep you busy including educational sessions, exhibit night, networking events, and the Shareware Industry Awards.

The Buzz

  • There was quite a bit of buzz around the topic of business models.
  • Free and paid models were discussed including very innovative approaches at improving performance with both.
  • The dominant model is definitely paid shared by participants and their service providers.
  • Publishers were very focused on a paid only model and hadn’t considered a hybrid model, which would leverage both paid and ad-supported options.
  • The hybrid model though may satisfy the greatest number of users.  I found an article on how online music is being impacted by free ad-supported alternatives and I thought this was a great parallel to how publishers might want to consider hybrid models with downloadable software.
  • I was excited to learn of a few publishers that were willing to participate in hybrid model trials to explore this further.  This may include both high and low converting shareware titles mixed with the ad-supported solution offered by my company.  I hope that we can complete these trials and share our findings at a future date through a subsequent blog post.

W3i’s Participation

  • I gave a presentation titled “Increasing Your Bottom Line through Leveraging an Understanding of User Engagement”.  In my presentation I highlighted suggestions and examples of how application publishers are improving user engagement from initial discovery all the way through the complete customer life cycle.  By pleasing the user, you get the same benefits as if you just focused on revenue, only easier.
  • My twin brother Rob spoke about How to Squeeze More Money from Your Apps in his presentation which detailed various business models.
  • W3i announced a new product at the conference, 3quency, which aims to provide a better custom toolbar solution.
  • W3i had a table at exhibit night which was the highlight of the trip for me.  For 3 hours a room was filled with conference attendees.  Here is a picture of me juggling in front of our table.

Top Three Ways to Improve Affiliate Payouts

Are you an Affiliate?  In working with affiliates for several years, I’ve put together a list of the top three ways to improve your payout with Affiliate Networks.

  1. Communication. It’s obvious, it’s a daily function of our business, but it is not always used by affiliates to properly convey their key measurements of value. For example, if the users on your site skew female, and the marketing materials you receive from publishers are targeted at males, let your publisher manager know so he can get more targeted materials for you that will increase your epc, and help drive up your rates.
  2. As our industry continues to find more ways to optimize campaigns through AFS-type systems, the open flow of information pertaining to the way an affiliate drives traffic is a crucial ingredient. When shared properly with publishers, it creates opportunities to identify poor traffic sources and helps steer an affiliate toward better-performing traffic sources. Working with your publisher manager to accomplish this will create value for you and the publisher that can get you to the next rate level.
  3. What is the user experience when they go through your download process? Have you actually run through it? If not, objectively go through the download to actually experience what you are asking your users to go through. By doing this, you can find numerous tweaks that will enhance the user experience, increase your epc, and help you reach your targeted ROI.

How Apps were Impacted by the Social Stream

As the social stream (Twitter, Facebook, et al.) grows and becomes more dynamic, the state of software applications has never been healthier or more exciting.  And the cool thing is that the growth of social media and applications is a mutual one.  The social stream has become the driving force behind the creation of new, innovative applications — apps continue to enhance, expand, and increase accessibility of the social stream.  Let’s take a quick look at how social media has bred new applications, and been integrated into others, now and in the future.

TwitterThere’s no way around it: social media entities breed applications.  Just look at Twitter.  Out of nowhere, an app vertical specifically geared towards making the Twitter experience more dynamic was born.  For those Wakoopians out there, just search for Twitter and you’ll be presented with 230+ application results. Mind you, these are only desktop and web apps; this doesn’t include mobile. A lens on Squidoo lists 275 unique desktop and web apps for Twitter alone.   iLounge has a great article on all of the iPhone’s 30+ Twitter apps you’ll find in the iTunes App Store.  And that’s just Twitter.  There were tens of thousands of Facebook web apps created since their Facebook platform was launched in May 2007.  When the next social media giant is born, expect a deluge of apps to enhance its experience.

The integration of social media into current apps and the merging of communication vehicles to include social media are also important effects to acknowledge.  Digsby provides an elegant solution that merges IM Flockfunctionality with Facebook, Twitter, MySpace, and LinkedIn integration.  Oh yeah, their app supports email notifications, as well — pretty cool.  The newest version of the Flock browser includes new social features like Twitter search, drag-and-drop tweets, Facebook chat, etc.  Until recently, I couldn’t send tweets into Evernote for safe-keeping.  Now I can.  These are just a few select examples; there are many more.  I expect to see social integration in applications to progress, providing users with more seamless experiences.

Other apps could improve their leverage of the social stream in new ways.  Feed readers should beef up support of the social stream.  They shouldfriendfeed stop seeing themselves as RSS aggregators by taking a hint from FriendFeed and start seeing themselves as streamed information aggregators (FeedDemon is starting to with the new pre-release 3.0 version). The lines between how and what is streamed should progressively blur.  Productivity apps could leverage the social stream in their help section; instead of searching forums for answers, what if I could open up “social help” and leverage the stream for problem solving without ever having to leave the application? I want the social stream to flood over my illustrations in Photoshop so I can receive real-time critiques.  I don’t see how any application publisher can ignore the power and influence of the social stream and the impact it has on in-application user engagement.

In my eyes, the effects of the social stream on application use are just beginning. Assuredly, we will see more dynamic ways to connect people, share content, and democratize information — all in real-time.  Twitter and Facebook are current examples of how social media breeds application verticals through easy-to-use, open platforms and how applications enhance the experience of these core social services.  This relationship will continue to mature as the walls around social networks crumble, providing users with new applications that do more to exponentially enhance and expand the social stream.

7th annual Stevie® Awards will be presented on June 22 in New York City

Online Game Provider Faces a Real Problem Generating Revenue From Toolbars

During a leading casual game publisher’s recent earnings call, the CFO cited that one of the primary reasons their quarterly revenue fell (Q1 2009 versus Q1 2008) was that they were generating less revenue from distributing the Google Toolbar offer with their downloads.

This is precisely the problem game publishers are faced with when having only a single offer to leverage with software recommendations from their installer, versus a marketplace of third party offers such as those provided by W3i’s Install IQ process. Had this game provider been a client of W3i’s Install IQ platform, they would have been able to recommend other offers with their downloads instead of relying solely on a Google Toolbar, and therefore closed the gap on their lost revenue from users which had now already all received the Google Toolbar offer in the prior year’s downloads.

Other companies with Windows applications should take note of this provider’s challenges, and proactively integrate with W3i before these revenue decreases show up in their quarterly financial numbers.

Today, I attempted to download from this provider to see what business models they were leveraging.

  1. $9.99 Monthly Recurring Subscription – The most prominent business model is to get you to register with your credit card for a free trial to their paid membership. You have 30 days to try the membership, after which time you will be auto-billed monthly at $9.99.

    To cancel the trial membership, I was instructed to call their 800 number and provide my account number. I wasn’t too enthused that I could register online but was required to make a phone call to cancel. However, the customer support rep was immediately available and didn’t make life too difficult. Overall, I was pleased with their customer support.
  2. Display Ads On Website – After subscribing to the free trial credit card subscription, you can then browse their catalog of online and downloadable games. The website has numerous banner ads on display which help them in generating revenues.
  3. 60 Minute Try Before You Buy Downloads – Even with a membership I was still encouraged to download 60 minute trials of various game titles.
  4. Toolbar and Other Software Recommendations – The first downloadable trial game came with Google offers including a Toolbar and Desktop Search option.

The Google Toolbar, when first opened, spawned an alert offering to change my default search as well as enable PageRank, further driving value to Google.

I tried downloading additional trial games and only one additional software recommendation, for Google’s Chrome Browser, was offered.

This demonstrates that even today the company has not yet diversified its dependence on Google’s very limited number of offers to be leveraged by their software recommendations.

From ad:tech San Francisco – Marketing Insight for Windows Applications

It is always great when you can talk to Internet marketers face-to-face and learn some of their insights first hand.  I attended ad:tech San Francisco this week,  meeting with a handful of top marketers in charge of various types of Windows applications.

Their Windows applications include:  a cutting edge Outlook plug-in, security applications primarily geared for consumer use, various types of utility applications for helping users to get their PC to operate at the best possible level, and a top video player application. Each of the marketers talked to me about their various marketing campaigns, and all of them stressed how important it is to meet ROI goals, especially in light of the current economic condition.

  • Paid search is working for many… The marketer from the cutting edge Outlook plug-in stated that since their app is so new to the world, most users haven’t discovered a need for the product category yet and, therefore, there isn’t much search traffic available to market this new application.
  • Radio is not worth it… The marketer at the utility application company stated that if he had to do it all over again, he would have never invested into getting a radio advertising campaign off the ground. He said measuring the ROI has proven challenging, and way too much effort for what he gets out of it.
  • Co-promotion has some legs… The security application company was working to white label their technology to a handful of very large security companies to ramp up their growth.
  • Social marketing is helpful, but too unpredictable… The utility application company has a Windows application with a social marketing strategy, and was in the process of winding down the product because it never got any traction. The cutting edge Outlook plug-in company was quite pleased with the social traction he was getting, but wanted to ramp up faster, and in a more controlled manner. Even successful social marketing campaigns need a spark to light the fire.
  • Bundling works… All four of the marketers at these Windows application companies stated that bundling was an area they were going to invest more energy and budget into because the ROI was very measurable and the volume of distribution was very meaningful.
